Single-Item & Specialty Moves in Orem, Utah
Some things are too heavy, too awkward, or too valuable to trust to two buddies and a YouTube tutorial. A grand piano. A 1,200-pound gun safe. Your grandmother's china hutch that's survived three generations and shouldn't be risked on a fourth move by amateurs.
Pianos: Weight, Balance, and Stakes
An upright piano weighs 300–500 pounds. A baby grand runs 500–600 pounds. A full concert grand can exceed 1,200 pounds. Beyond the weight, pianos are structurally delicate — legs, pedal mechanisms, and the finish are all vulnerable to even minor impacts.
Our piano-trained crews use piano boards (specialized heavy-duty dollies), locking straps, padded blankets, and ramp systems designed for these instruments. Staircases get measured in advance. Floor protection is laid down on both ends. We've moved upright pianos down spiral staircases in Salt Lake City's Avenues homes and baby grands through sliding glass doors in Saratoga Springs new builds.
Gun Safes: Heavy, Top-Heavy, and Unforgiving
Gun safes are the single most common injury-causing item in DIY moves. A standard residential safe weighs 600–1,000 pounds, and the center of gravity sits high, making them prone to tipping on stairs and inclines. A safe that tips over going down basement stairs will go through a wall — and possibly through a person.
We use safe-specific dollies with pneumatic wheels, stair-climbing tracks, and a minimum three-person crew for any safe over 500 pounds. The route from the safe's current position to the truck gets planned in advance during the walkthrough, including floor protection and any door removals needed for clearance.
Other Specialty Items We Move Regularly
Hot tubs and spa equipment. Treadmills and ellipticals (Pelotons are especially common right now). Antique furniture that can't be tipped, tilted, or stacked. Large aquariums. Pool tables (we handle disassembly of the slate and felt). Commercial appliances like restaurant ranges and walk-in cooler components.
For any oversized or high-value single item, we do a dedicated walkthrough to assess weight, access points, and the equipment needed. You get a flat-rate quote for that specific item, not an hourly open-ended estimate.
Single-Item Moves FAQ
How much does it cost to move a piano in Utah?
Upright pianos typically run $200–$400 for a local move depending on stairs and access. Baby grands and grand pianos range $350–$800+ depending on the complexity. Stairs, narrow hallways, and distance from the truck all factor in. We quote a flat rate after seeing the piano and the access points — no hourly surprises.
Can you move a gun safe up or down stairs?
Yes — this is one of our most requested single-item jobs. We use stair-climbing equipment specifically rated for safe weights. Going down is actually harder than going up (gravity works against you). We assess the staircase during the walkthrough to determine crew size and equipment needs. Most residential safe staircase moves require a three-to-four-person crew.
Why shouldn't I just move a heavy item myself?
Because the math doesn't work in your favor. A single ER visit for a back injury costs more than hiring professionals for the year. A dropped piano or tipped gun safe damages your floors, walls, door frames, and potentially the item itself — repairs that quickly exceed $1,000. Our crew has the equipment, the training, and the insurance to handle it safely. That's what you're paying for.
